Entering the New Zealand Debating Championships

Prepared Debating - The Norwood Competition

Up to sixteen teams may enter. They will be selected in the following order
  1. Members of the New Zealand Debating Council (NZDC) may enter one team as of right
  2. Members of organisations invited to enter a team by the NZDC. Currently the national bodies of
  3. A team whose members have all previously represented a member of the NZDC in prepared debating
  4. A team whose members have all previously competed in the Norwood Competition
  5. A team who have competed at their clubs highest level, and are approved by the NZDC Officers as being of sufficiently high standard

Impromptu Debating - The Wellington Cup Competition

Up to sixteen teams may enter. They will be selected in the following order
  1. Members of the New Zealand Debating Council (NZDC) may enter one team as of right
  2. Members of organisations invited to enter a team by the NZDC. Currently the national bodies of
  3. A team whose members have all previously represented a member of the NZDC in prepared debating
  4. A team whose members have all previously competed in the Wellington Cup Competition

Oratory - The Protectus Cup Competition

Competitors are selected from
  1. Members of the New Zealand Debating Council (NZDC) may enter one orator as of right
  2. Members of organisations invited to enter a speaker by the NZDC. Currently the national bodies of
Some member unions such as the defunct Wanganui Speaking Union, may not plan to enter this competition. If you wish to enter you may wish to contact member unions and see if they will enter you as their representative. I have no objection to this, provided you realise that you will be supporting that member union in the "best speaking union" competition, if you are successful.

Impromptu Speaking - The Canterbury Cup Competition

Competitors are selected from
  1. Members of the New Zealand Debating Council (NZDC) may enter one speaker as of right
  2. Members of organisations invited to enter a speaker by the NZDC. Currently the national bodies of
Some member unions such as the defunct Wanganui Speaking Union, may not plan to enter this competition. If you wish to enter you may wish to contact member unions and see if they will enter you as their representative.
